We were once again delighted by the breathtaking views along the coast and through mountainous regions. There were many fascinating places to explore. Additionally, we were captivated by the old hotels in Queensland that were constructed many years ago. I captured some of these on my phone.</div><div><div><br /></div><div>These hotels used to accommodate a wide range of people. They were once a home away from home for travelling salesmen. They catered to prospectors who were on their way to the prosperous mineral fields of central Queensland, and individuals who visited towns with the intention of spending their hard-earned money.</div><div><br /></div><div>Some of these hotels have been lovingly preserved, with the ornamental iron railings restored and painted. Others have endured the effects of time and weather. As mining booms came and went, populations dwindled, and storms wreaked havoc, some hotels suffered the consequences.</div></div><div><br /></div><div>Here's a selection from some towns of North Queensland.</div><div><br /></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; It appears that I recorded 104 books on that platform this year. When I read books that I think are not worth recording they don't make it to my list, so I probably read at least another 10 not added in. The Scanner</h3><div>My Canon LIDE300 flatbed scanner provides a range of tools for making colour correction to those old faded photos from the seventies and eighties. It is also simple enough for excellent correction to be made to old sepia and black and white photos.<div><br /></div><div>I'm sure most scanners' software would have these functions, it is just a matter of taking time to find them. The temptation to just choose Photo for a simple scan does not reveal all the tools but simply saves the scanned photos to a designated folder.</div><div><br /></div><div>Using the scanners' software gives me many of the correction tools I would otherwise need to use in a program such as Photoshop.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>From the opening screen one selects ScanGear to reveal all the possibilities. </div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3GWO0Dmkdmt5pv_B64rviqlNs1RcAuJMStJR2IOix8Poxte_8qx_34vIWprx37WKqQ4AI6SetW_tmZzADtH6dNN_AVoI0YGC7vGhSu2B0l0woXpvDWryYmzaxJ-Z_dssTSNksRVk_MJ8A-dAiHTqR7MqDHt-jUAkn9_rndUMgHgPMeR5593PNHw6L/s342/canonutility.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="275" data-original-width="342" height="257" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3GWO0Dmkdmt5pv_B64rviqlNs1RcAuJMStJR2IOix8Poxte_8qx_34vIWprx37WKqQ4AI6SetW_tmZzADtH6dNN_AVoI0YGC7vGhSu2B0l0woXpvDWryYmzaxJ-Z_dssTSNksRVk_MJ8A-dAiHTqR7MqDHt-jUAkn9_rndUMgHgPMeR5593PNHw6L/s320/canonutility.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Scanner menu</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><div>Place more than one photo on the platen and preview.</div><div>Choose individual settings for each photo before final scan.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhY0dCcejjh1eaDeVbVCgOI-lCfwYuAPbgDK6v_OtLZDlkx3JHdW9eJf8WSPUYx7EFsqlTRQtneccxcUdRkJSCTrCHuxptsx40T-QZzAomw5mB0AmxOVvcw6beuW8SW7fuzZd2LSdEGt9qmy1QL2HzsEaiQYsCvlZ6CNMIzGLvcxlF3MOWxEntNoSkc/s1191/preview%20screen.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="725" data-original-width="1191" height="390" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhY0dCcejjh1eaDeVbVCgOI-lCfwYuAPbgDK6v_OtLZDlkx3JHdW9eJf8WSPUYx7EFsqlTRQtneccxcUdRkJSCTrCHuxptsx40T-QZzAomw5mB0AmxOVvcw6beuW8SW7fuzZd2LSdEGt9qmy1QL2HzsEaiQYsCvlZ6CNMIzGLvcxlF3MOWxEntNoSkc/w640-h390/preview%20screen.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div>In the screenshot of the Preview screen above the photo on the left is from the 1970s with fading correction set to medium and the one on the right from the mid 1980s with fading correction set to low.<br /><div>Further adjustments can be made to each photo prior to the final scan using the saturation/colour correction, brightness/contrast, black/white points or tone curve tools.</div><div><br /></div><div><h3 style="text-align: left;">2. In this post, I am referring to the certificates that are found within the Australian Colonial Joint Copying Project which can be found here <a href="https://nla.gov.au/nla.obj-743616150">online through Trove</a>. These registers cover seamen from across the world who plied the seas in colonial times from 1874 until 1921. Some obtained their Board of Trade certificates across different colonies and States.</div><div><br /></div><div>I decided to find all the South Australian-born men from each of the registers. The best procedure seemed to be to go ahead and transcribe those found which would then be useful for other genealogists searching for their South Australian seamen. </div><div>I set up a spreadsheet with the following headings </div><div>No. of certificate, Name, Date of Birth, Place of Birth, Certificate granted, Date of certificate, the Number of the image in the microfilm where it appeared and lastly, the Source with a link to that page of the microfilm.</div><div><br /></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiY4Zx_UMsJN19KTxa-RBoK1nd1H4v6XxE8tlfliuudFdqqbCqj_JRkGb0JebnXiEhI6zkrwIkaGWLl-xyD4SFwEB3DJTjWSmH_ADYUc_TLIN5dg8iqzeBXbYVDOap0Sa6LQO07nmYoJGAoNaM0oXWYbBP8sRdQgwQBfsN6jIK_R-zh0nzfSMQwU59N/s617/alfred%20russell.png" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="342" data-original-width="617" height="221" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiY4Zx_UMsJN19KTxa-RBoK1nd1H4v6XxE8tlfliuudFdqqbCqj_JRkGb0JebnXiEhI6zkrwIkaGWLl-xyD4SFwEB3DJTjWSmH_ADYUc_TLIN5dg8iqzeBXbYVDOap0Sa6LQO07nmYoJGAoNaM0oXWYbBP8sRdQgwQBfsN6jIK_R-zh0nzfSMQwU59N/w400-h221/alfred%20russell.png" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://nla.gov.au/nla.obj-1939872471/view">https://nla.gov.au/nla.obj-1939872471/view</a></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><div><br /></div><div>The registers often gave one, two or three first names, very useful for identifying an individual and matching him up with other records. The date of birth as seen above is just the year. If you are stuck for ideas here's a genealogy slant on the months of 2022. After all, one wants to have fun!</div><h4 style="text-align: left;">Geneary</h4><div>This month is nearly gone today being the 26th. I've done some web editing for the <a href="https://www.genealogy-noosa.org.au/">local society</a>, attended planning meetings, prepared a display, updated an index, edited some entries in our<a href="https://www.librarycat.org/lib/CNGHRG"> library catalogue</a> and purchased a new laptop for the local group. We are all weary of the ongoing Covid pandemic but a successful volunteers' morning for our group brought us together with hopes for a better year.</div><h4 style="text-align: left;">Febituary</h4><div>A blog post is planned with obituaries found in Trove relevant to my families' stories. </div><h4 style="text-align: left;">Marchart</h4><div>Perhaps I'll look at the variety of charts available through the genealogy software packages. Keep these in mind for family gifts.</div><h4 style="text-align: left;">Appreality</h4><div>Time to revisit all those apps on my devices, tablet, phone and computer. Do I really need 4 notetaking programs, 5 genealogy programs and 3 cloud services? I'm sure there are more than those, it will take time to review their uses.</div><h4 style="text-align: left;">Maydoit</h4><div>Oh, this is an easy one, there are so many things I may do! What about finishing digitising the photos or compiling those blog posts into some order for publication. I may do it.</div><h4 style="text-align: left;">Junkit</h4><div>What's in the bottom of that cupboard and those drawers? Is it time to discard rarely used resources purchased in the fresh flush of genealogy endeavours?</div><h4 style="text-align: left;">Jubilate</h4><div>More than halfway through the year it will be time to celebrate all that has been achieved.</div><h4 style="text-align: left;">Augmentit</h4><div>Time to get back to <a href="https://www.wikitree.com/">Wikitree</a> and add ancestors' profiles, sources and biographies. Could be a month to improve the entries on <a href="https://www.findagrave.com/">FindaGrave</a> as well.</div><h4 style="text-align: left;">Septarate </h4><div>Perhaps break up those stories into separate families for ease of reading</div><h4 style="text-align: left;">Octendit</h4><div>Extend the previous months' activities into this one, sure to get something done!</div><h4 style="text-align: left;">Novover</h4><div>Not time to move over yet, but a rollover of tasks not previously done. This is in addition to adding the metadata in the details fields of the photos.</div><div><br /></div><div>1. Copy the photo, open Paint and paste</div><div>2. Drag the bottom corner either sideways or down to create extra canvas. You may need to zoom out in order to see the bottom of your photo. Here I have zoomed out to 12.5%.</div><div>3. A simple spreadsheet helps me name files consistently. The clip below shows the details to be added, then the final column, in this case, column H puts the data together generating the file name to copy. The simple formula used here is CONCATENATE to join all the columns that have data in them. </div><div>This works for a wide variety of photos as one need only fill in the details available such as the street scene photo listed in row 5. Empty cells are ignored with this formula. Column D has an underscore which separates the name of the photo or the Who from the rest of the more descriptive elements of the file name.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rEwNqMFQbOA/YYeMnWowMuI/AAAAAAAAszs/pGLH-9JAS7ItJEHaHpoy3mwopDHko_uVACNcBGAsYHQ/s981/concatentate.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="158" data-original-width="981" height="104" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rEwNqMFQbOA/YYeMnWowMuI/AAAAAAAAszs/pGLH-9JAS7ItJEHaHpoy3mwopDHko_uVACNcBGAsYHQ/w640-h104/concatentate.png" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div><br /></div><div>My photos are then stored in surname folders where applicable with the rest filed either by year or place. All photos and data are backed up to external hard drives and cloud storage.</div><h4 style="text-align: left;">Storage</h4><div>Physical photos once scanned are added to <a href="https://www.albox.com.au/product-category/albox-photo-albums/">Albox archival albums</a> which I purchased from <a href="https://www.gould.com.au/">Gould Genealogy</a> The photo pages have convenient slip-in labels for adding detail about the photos.</div><h4 style="text-align: left;">Sharing</h4><div>I initially used a Dropbox folder for sharing with immediate family but now I have paid storage elsewhere I add photos and documents to Google Drive and share folders from there. Stories using photos in blog posts over on <a href="https://earlieryears.blogspot.com/">Earlier Years</a> are designed to reach a wider audience.</div><div><br /></div>This post first appeared on https://carmelgalvin.infocrgalvinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01118766224187668713noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5904175963756061657.post-84452909028873616262021-09-08T13:56:00.000+10:002021-09-08T13:56:14.851+10:00Saving Trove lists<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wSf8OTM2p-M/YTgrxg9-RrI/AAAAAAAAr6g/hYnG7yYNisEX_d8TazZNm38C82LgpFZ0wCNcBGAsYHQ/s600/Trove%2Blists%2B%25281%2529.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="300" data-original-width="600" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wSf8OTM2p-M/YTgrxg9-RrI/AAAAAAAAr6g/hYnG7yYNisEX_d8TazZNm38C82LgpFZ0wCNcBGAsYHQ/s16000/Trove%2Blists%2B%25281%2529.png" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div>Do you have a variety of Trove lists made as you research your family history? </div><div><br /></div><div>It is likely that you compiled these over time as new resources became available through Trove. It is National Family History Month so what better time could there be to review and upgrade the tools you use for family history?<h3 style="text-align: left;">Simple Software enhancements</h3><div>Do you ever lose track of where that cursor (cursed thing) is? It is also National Family History Month here, an excellent time to work on some of those unfinished projects.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Shauna Hicks on <a href="https://diaryofanaustraliangenealogist.blogspot.com/2021/08/australian-convicts-nfhm-new-resources.html">Diary of an Australian Genealogist</a> mentioned a photo collage she recently made and this sparked the idea for this blog post, an activity to undertake during NFHM. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Whether you have endless family photos or just a few, a collage is a quick visual method to generate some extra family interest. Here are three simple methods to assemble a collage whether they be all photos, a combination of photos and document images, or photos of heirlooms. Many of the mobile photo collage apps add a watermark or branding unless you pay or subscribe. These are 3 free options.</div><h3 style="text-align: left;">Online</h3><div style="text-align: left;">There are several online options on sites such as <a href="https://www.befunky.com/create/collage/">BeFunky</a> and <a href="https://www.picmonkey.com/">PicMonkey</a> but <a href="https://www.canva.com/">Canva</a> with an excellent range of free Photo Collage templates tops the list of those available.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">From the <a href="https://www.canva.com/">Canva</a> home page simply search for <a href="https://www.canva.com/search/templates?q=photo%20collage">photo collage.</a> I prefer to choose from the more menu so that the free ones in each category appear as shown below.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fetXkWJZN8g/YRerBOcWmoI/AAAAAAAAreQ/AWyPeAvcV_kK4qGJyJ6gGg43BqTflY9BACNcBGAsYHQ/s570/canvacollages.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Canva photo collage" border="0" data-original-height="570" data-original-width="534" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fetXkWJZN8g/YRerBOcWmoI/AAAAAAAAreQ/AWyPeAvcV_kK4qGJyJ6gGg43BqTflY9BACNcBGAsYHQ/w375-h400/canvacollages.jpg" title="Canva photo collage" width="375" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: left;">Select a Free template then use the Uploads button on the left to upload your photos. Each uploaded photo can then just be dropped onto the template where it will replace the existing photo. Edit any text or click on any photo to adjust or remove it.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">These collages are set at 25 x 20 cm. If you wish to make a larger or smaller size, choose Custom Size from the home page and add the desired dimensions. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Add and resize the photos until the desired effect is achieved. Add some text and decorative elements by choosing these features from the left side panel.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Download choices include png, jpg or pdf print for a high-quality document.</div><h3 style="text-align: left;">PowerPoint </h3><div style="text-align: left;">If you have PowerPoint already on your computer it is simple enough to assemble a photo collage. If not, use the free online version.</div><div style="text-align: left;">In a new blank document choose the <b>Design tab>Slide size</b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b><br /></b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2Xqeixb_To8/YRe4ZO8rkdI/AAAAAAAAreY/XoyEkpWtGak1znduz4SLC2tuXHiDP4udgCNcBGAsYHQ/s375/slidesizeppt.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Slide size ppt" border="0" data-original-height="353" data-original-width="375" height="301" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2Xqeixb_To8/YRe4ZO8rkdI/AAAAAAAAreY/XoyEkpWtGak1znduz4SLC2tuXHiDP4udgCNcBGAsYHQ/w320-h301/slidesizeppt.jpg" title="Slide size ppt" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">On a blank slide, insert photos, and crop to shape to add some interest.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Add appropriate icons and text boxes.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Format the background with another image, colour or pattern.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Export as pdf or image - png or jpg</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ioQOLHTAxKg/YRfDgtWBmSI/AAAAAAAAreg/tyW92Y9TsxQLi_1-ND8hsf6kh2HCsrVyACNcBGAsYHQ/s1040/Trip%2Bto%2BAlice.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1040" data-original-width="720" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ioQOLHTAxKg/YRfDgtWBmSI/AAAAAAAAreg/tyW92Y9TsxQLi_1-ND8hsf6kh2HCsrVyACNcBGAsYHQ/w445-h640/Trip%2Bto%2BAlice.jpg" width="445" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Trip to central Australia - A4 collage created in PowerPoint</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><br /><h3 style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Google Drive</h3><div style="text-align: left;">There are two options within Google Drive to use.</div><div style="text-align: left;">Slides is the Google alternative to PowerPoint.</div><div style="text-align: left;">Choose <b>Slides>New</b></div><div style="text-align: left;">From the <b>File</b> menu scroll down to choose <b>Page Setup</b></div><div style="text-align: left;">Set your desired dimensions and proceed as above.</div><div style="text-align: left;">Individual pages can be downloaded as either jpg or png.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">The other alternative in Google Drive is to use Drawings with a blank canvas. Now this topic is so wide that a 60 minute chat may barely scratch the surface, so let us look at some terminology.</div><h3 style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Apps</h3><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">When mobile devices first appeared on the scene the word app was used to describe a small program that could be installed on your device whether that was a smart phone or a tablet. In more common usage nowadays an app can be any small computer program usually on a mobile device but now used on computers too, often described as web apps. Has the word app reverted to its origin - application, in the sense of meaning any computer program, or do you still think of it in terms of mobile devices?</div><h3 style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Family History Tasks</h3><div>These are many and varied but may come under these general headings</div><div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>Searching for information</li><li>Evaluating information</li><li>Recording the information</li><li>Communicating</li><li>Preserving information</li></ul><h3 style="text-align: left;">General notes</h3></div><div>Some apps can be used to achieve all of the above tasks to various degrees. These include the large online genealogy companies - Ancestry MyHeritage, FindmyPast and FamilySearch all of which have web and mobile apps. One can search for relatives, evaluate the information found, record it and share it with others. They can be found in County Record offices and archives, family papers and missionary files. </div><div><br /></div><div>In many of the named family files such as <a href="https://nla.gov.au/nla.obj-798978744">Hassall</a>, Hayward or Hearnshaw to name a few from the <a href="https://www.nla.gov.au/australian-joint-copying-project/ajcp-m-series">M Series</a>, collections of personal correspondence may include letters to and from related women and sometimes include named photos. </div><h3 style="text-align: left;">British Women's Emigration Association</h3>An excellent collection comes from The Female Middle Class Emigration Society which was established in London in 1862.<div><br /><div>The aim of the Society was to help 'educated women of a respectable character' to find work as teachers or governesses in the colonies and help them in securing passages, purchasing cabin fittings and making loans, which were to be repaid within two years.</div><div><br /></div><div>This guide from the <a href="https://nla.gov.au/nla.obj-770251176/findingaid">British Women's Emigration Association</a> contains two letter books in which we find correspondence from the governesses who had emigrated to the colonies through the auspices of the Society. Thanks to the authors of this guide all the names are listed so if you search for an <b>Eliza Walpole</b>, you would be directed to these letter books.</div><div><br /></div><div>The meticulously kept Index provides an indication of where to find the letters within the microfilm.
